It is with utmost sadness that I receive the news about Ulrike’s passing. I represented the European Commission’s Directorate General for Competition during the negotiations for the EU-Japan Free Trade Agreement. Ulrike was stationed at the EU Representation in Tokyo. She accompanied us to numerous – sometimes very difficult – meetings with the the Japanese Authorities. She was a perfect organiser who was always meticulously prepared. She was generous, friendly and a fantastic guide to life in Tokyo and great places to visit often ‘off the beaten path’.
I cherish my memories from my Tokyo visits and meeting Ulrike there . What I will remember most about her is her frequent and infectious smiles – always underlined by the reddest lipstick I have ever seen!
