Uli and Tübingen (from Jeff)

Uli always spoke fondly of Tübingen, the town in southern Germany where she had attended university in the 1990s. Founded in the 1470s, the university is one of Germany’s oldest. Students have included the poet Hölderlin, the philosophers Hegel and Schelling, and Kepler the astronomer. When she recalled Tübingen, Uli usually mentioned a local landmark: […]

Uli and Jeff 2

Reading the warm remembrances posted here — on this website created lovingly by Dylan — I saw that Uli had many different sets of good friends, who often didn’t know each other. How lucky all of us were to have shared some time with her. And I’ve been rereading the emails I received regularly from […]

The Lipstick Queen

Uli never wore much makeup.  But her trademark was her bright red lipstick 💄. For me she was the Lipstick Queen. I therefore had to present her with the book by Poppy King, a young Australian woman, who became a very successful entrepreneur with her lipsticks, thus accommodating both Uli‘s love of books and lipsticks. […]

Hörnum/Sylt Spring 2024

Uli loved walking holidays in the mountains. I convinced her to try the North Sea on my favourite island, Sylt, the most northern tip of Germany. She loved it. She walked the island with its great variety of landscape. She also followed the traces of the many  famous German artists, like Thomas Mann and Valeska […]

Colourful Uli

We only knew each other fleetingly. Compatriotes and colleagues, we’d smile and greet each other. I was the assistant who moved your Korea Interview around so it suited you best. Our exchange then was lighthearted and positive – I knew how much you wanted to be top of that list. You came so close, too. […]

Uli and Jeff

Some of my memories of Uli, from 2014 (when she was living here in Tokyo) through later years: Seeing her go from being a novice at Japanese language to gaining superior proficiency, especially in reading/writing. By the end, she was reading Haruki Murakami and other authors in Japanese. Japanese was one of 10 or so […]

Uli & Gisella

When I first met Uli, she was 18 and I was 20 – and we both were somewhat cocksy students high on having done well in our Abitur. So we met at this rather surreal bootcamp held by the Deutsche Studienstiftung des Deutschen Volkes where they choose the future elite of the German nation (such as Gudrun Ensslin or Frauke Petri) – clearly neither of us made the grade, which in the case of Uli was a serious mistake.

Uli in Chile

At the Delegation of the European Union to Chile we have received with great pain the early departure of our dear Uli. She was with us for four years, 2016-2020, leaving an indelible mark, not only for her beautiful, always red smile and her gorgeous colorful dresses, for her excellent work (the attractive and catchy […]

Tokyo Bars Uli Enjoyed (from Jeff)

When she wasn’t reading or working in Tokyo — or visiting restaurants or traveling — Uli liked going to bars to socialize. Some of her favorites in the city, tried during the years she lived here and her later visits: BAR TRAM (Ebisu): Her favorite cocktails were Yuzu with Champagne and Hoshiko Matador (pineapple, lime, […]

Books Uli Enjoyed (from Jeff)

During Uli’s online remembrance, one of her colleagues from the EU expressed an interest in knowing more about Uli’s books, which were so important in Uli’s life.             This moved me to make the list below of novels and a few other works (narrative poems, memoirs) that Uli said she’d enjoyed or been impressed by […]

Champagne

I will always remember Uli for her love of champagne especially Louis Roederer. Cheers 🥂

Tokyo 2023 Summer Memory

She was wearing a beautiful dress that matched the place. Fashion is one of the things we talk about together. Like all of you, I love her style.

Despedida a Chile (good-bye to Chile) en 2020

In August of 2020 it was still necessary to get a ¨permiso¨ to go out in public in the capital of Chile, but Uli and I wanted to share one last time together in Santiago before her return to Brussels.  So we got our passes to be in public and met for a picnic in […]
